Why I Cancelled My Freelancers
Last year I was paying a copywriter, a part-time designer, and using three different freelancers for various bits of my projects. Not because I couldn't do those things myself — I just didn't have the time or headspace to context-switch between them all. Then I stopped treating Claude as a chatbot and started treating it as a team, and I cancelled everything.
The Role Framework
The shift is simple but it changes everything: you stop asking Claude to 'help' and you start assigning it a role. Not just 'act as a copywriter' — that's too vague. You give it a full brief. Who it is, what it knows, how it thinks, what it cares about, what it avoids. The more specific the role, the more useful the output.
A generic 'marketing expert' gives you generic advice. A 'direct response copywriter who writes for indie SaaS founders, never uses corporate language, and always leads with a specific outcome over a vague claim' gives you something you might actually use.
What This Looks Like
I have a 'Strategist Claude' session where I think through business decisions — loaded with context about my business, my goals, and my constraints. I have a 'Copywriter Claude' for anything customer-facing — loaded with my brand voice, my audience's language, and examples of copy I've written that converted. I have a 'Dev Claude' that has my codebase conventions and tech stack preferences front-loaded before every coding session.
The key insight is that Claude doesn't lose energy, doesn't have bad days, doesn't need onboarding time if you set the context properly, and doesn't charge you by the hour. The cost of switching between roles is zero.
The One Thing That Stays Human
What this means practically: you can run at a pace that would have required a team of four a few years ago. Not because the AI is magic — because you've removed all the coordination overhead. No Slack threads. No waiting for files. No explaining your vision for the fifth time.
The one thing you still need: taste. Knowing when something is good, when it's not, when to push back on what Claude gave you. That's the part that stays human. The rest is just building the right context and knowing which role to activate.
